Week seven: Retailing

Smashbox Cosmetics are on display and sold in many department stores. One of the most known makeup chain store is Sephora. So I decided to do this blog on Sephora’s retailing.
Although I have been to Sephora numerous amount of times, I revisited the chain store to throughly analyze and critique it. There are a vast amount of their stores in new york but I chose to visit my favorite one which is located in the middle of the city. This Sephora is on 34th street between 7th ave. and Broadway. It is a fabulous area near the Empire State Building and Penn Station. They are conveniently open Mon-Sat  from 9am-9pm and Sundays from 11am-7pm.
When walking into Sephora I experience a burst of energy. The atmosphere is very fresh and bright because of its fluorescent lighting. The theme of sephora is black and white which is highly chic and sophisticated- if you ask me. What attracts me the most is how clean and well-organized the store is. Sephora’s layout is extremely well thought out and allows customers to easily find what they are looking for. Sephora carries endless amounts of brans and designers such as Smashbox (woohoo), Tarte, Stila, NARS, Buxom, CHANEL, Korres, Prada, LORAC, Sephora Collection, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Dior, Lancome, Laura Mercier, and much more. So you would think it would be overwhelming when going there, but its the exact opposite! Their design makes sure to separate all the various types of products and brands into different sections of the store. Most people associate Sephora as being a cosmetics chain store, however they carry more than you think! For both women and men they have fragrances, skin care products, tooth care products, hair products, bath and body products, as well as value sets, tools, and other accessories. Unlike most makeup stores, Sephora allows you to test any of their products. Throughout the store they have little booths set up with mirrors (well-lit), brushes, Q tips, tissues, and makeup remover, which allows anyone to try on what they please. My favorite part of Sephora are the free samples! As you know it can sometimes be challenging to chose a product when there are SO many to pick from. So if you are unsure you can ask an employee and they will gladly make samples for you. This way you can take them home to make sure you have the right products before you invest in them! Another superb aspect of Sephora is the service. The employees are friendly and excited to assist their customers. Sephora usually has an abundance of staff at all times because the store is always jam-packed with customers. One time I was at Sephora and it was the busiest I had ever seen it. Nevertheless, an employee took her time and helped me for over an hour. Not only did she make sure I found everything I needed but also didn’t leave my side until she knew I was completely satisfied and with the products. She also showed me techniques and applied different makeup products on me as well. This goes to show that she took her job seriously and really wanted to make sure my experience at Sephora was pleasant.
This past visit to Sephora was eye opening and made me realize that there is so much that goes into retailing. Sephora is a thriving business because everything they do is extremely well thought out. I personally can’t get enough of the store and every time I go it is an enjoyable and fun experience!
