Brothers Dean and Davis Factor (great grandsons of makeup icon Max Factor) created Smashbox Photo Studios in 1991 in the home of fame, Los Angeles, California. Instantly, the studio became a hot spot for celebrities, models, and famous photographers. Due to their popularity and success, Dean and Davis were often asked to create a professional-quality makeup line to enhance their photo shoots. So naturally with Deans MBA in Business and Davis’ Celebrity and fashion photography background they decided to combine their skills and create Smashbox Cosmetics in 1996. Eager to debut their company, they had the cosmetics line created and ready in just under four months! Unfortunately, the first four years was a little bit of a disaster. The company struggled in almost every area. Consumers were not responding to the packaging, women complained that the designs were too masculine. Expenses were extremely high and keeping the stores stocked with product was challenging for the brothers. During the first year, Smashbox Cosmetics spent $4 million out of their own pockets! Even so, the results were disappointing. However, things turned around when the company turned to QVC (home shopping channel). Dean worked out a deal with them to sell their makeup on the popular channel. QVC gave high visibility and helped the company get back on its feet. Since then, Smashbox Cosmetics has become a profitable company with devoted customers and all different types of consumers! They are known for their insider beauty secrets and trends. With Smashbox Cosmetics people can achieve a professional look without needing a makeup artist!
Mission statement: A makeup line that is fashionable, looks great on camera but is wearable for the everyday woman.
